This is me being thankful

Today my co-worker mentioned she had seen a shirtless man riding a motorcycle. We both agreed that not only was this terribly unsafe it also made one look low class. Men with their shirts off in general bother me. Unless you’re in your backyard, at the river or the beach or in your living room, put your shirt on. You don’t need to walk the streets of Portland with your man teats hanging out.

Anyway…

I turned to my co-worker and said,

“Did I ever tell you about the time when I was living in Colorado and I was riding my scooter in a bikini top and I ran into a bee at 30 miles per hour?”

She looked at me funny, “Wait, back up to you riding a scooter in a bikini top. And you lived where?”

“In Steamboat Springs. We were coming back from the lake and there’s no helmet law there so I guess I thought riding with no shirt was okay too. Hitting that bee hurt like a bitch though.”

“You’ve lived in all these places that I had no idea about. Why were you there?”

“Uhh….I followed my 25 year old boyfriend there when I was 18. We lived five miles out of town in an old school house with no running water. We had an outhouse 15 feet from the house. Oh and there was an old school bus parked in the driveway that was full of clothes for some reason. Whenever I wanted something new to wear, I’d go dig through the bus.”

As I watched the look on her face and heard myself telling this story I realized that sometimes we never appreciate how amazing our lives have been until we tell our tales out loud.

It’s not that my time there was good…but how many people ever get to lay in a field on a mattress and watch the Colorado sky. How many people have climbed down a ladder from their attic bedroom at night to walk out into the dark to the outhouse, hoping there are no snakes or spiders because there would be no way to see them?

How many people have been stung by a bee while riding a scooter in only a bikini top?

Sometimes it’s good to look back on your life and appreciate all the truly fantastic things you’ve experienced. Good, bad, weird, sad and wonderful. I love them all.

Now I’m going to L.A. to  make more amazing memories. Don’t miss me too much.
